Mumbai: As part of its preparations for the upcoming elections, the Election Commission of India (EC) is actively revising Mumbai’s electoral roll, with the final version set to be published on August 30. Voters have until August 20 to register new entries or update existing details.
In a bid to enhance electoral efficiency and increase voter turnout, the EC has issued a directive urging citizens to link their mobile numbers to their voter identification cards. In a meeting held at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday, the EC highlighted the importance of mobile number integration into the voter ID database. This step aims to streamline the voting process by enabling easier access to voter information.
By linking mobile numbers, voters will be able to search for their voter ID details online, download an electronic copy of their voter ID, and receive timely updates on voting dates and polling booth locations directly on their phones. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to boost voter engagement and improve the electoral process. Alongside this, the EC has requested political parties to undertake awareness campaigns to encourage voter registration. Additionally, the number of polling stations will be increased, with a plan to reduce the average number of voters per station from 1,500 to between 1,000 and 1,200.
This move is designed to alleviate crowding at polling booths and ensure a smoother voting experience for the electorate. The emphasis on linking mobile numbers to voter IDs reflects the EC’s commitment to leveraging technology for better electoral management. It also aligns with efforts to modernise the electoral process and address common issues such as delayed or inaccurate voter information.
As the deadline for the electoral roll revision approaches, voters are encouraged to act swiftly to ensure their mobile numbers are linked to their voter IDs. This will not only facilitate a more efficient voting process but also contribute to a more informed and engaged electorate.
