A 26-year-old construction worker died after falling from the fifth floor of a building under construction in Bolinj, Virar West, on Saturday morning, according to a report by Loksatta. The death was recorded at the Bolinj police station and is being reported as the fourth fatal construction-related accident in the Vasai-Virar area in about a month.
The deceased worker was identified as Ramzan Riyazul Sheikh. He was working at the Samarth Balaji Griha Nirman Sanstha building in Bolinj when he reportedly lost his balance at around 8.30 am and fell from the fifth floor. He suffered severe head injuries and heavy bleeding from his nose and mouth.
Residents at the site took Sheikh to the Virar Rural Hospital for treatment. However, medical officers declared him dead before admission, the report said. The circumstances surrounding the fall were recorded by the Bolinj police station.
The incident has renewed concerns about safety arrangements at construction sites across Vasai-Virar, where several large housing projects are under construction. On August 13, Sadiqul Sohab Sheikh, 43, died after falling while painting the Rashmi Star City building in Naigaon East.
On August 23, Mursalim Momin, 22, reportedly fell from the 15th floor while painting a 22-storey building under construction in the Babhol area of Vasai West. The report also referred to an earlier death on May 5, when 28-year-old construction worker Kavita Sahu died after falling from the eighth floor of the Shwetganga Construction building near Achole Road in Nalasopara.
The sequence of incidents has prompted residents to question whether construction sites are being adequately monitored by the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation. Citizens cited in the report alleged that the administration was not treating worker safety with sufficient seriousness while construction activity continues across the city.
The latest death places renewed attention on basic safeguards for work at height, including helmets, safety belts and other protective equipment. The report did not include a response from the municipal corporation, the building developer or the contractor regarding the alleged safety lapses.
