India’s expanding expressway network is increasingly incorporating ecological safeguards, with the Varanasi–Kolkata Expressway set to include wildlife passages at regular intervals through Jharkhand’s Chatra district. The move reflects a growing shift towards infrastructure planning that seeks to improve regional connectivity while reducing the environmental impact of large transport corridors.
The proposed wildlife passages will be positioned across environmentally sensitive sections of the expressway to allow animals to move safely between fragmented habitats. Highway planners have incorporated underpasses, box culverts and dedicated crossing structures into the engineering design, aiming to minimise wildlife-vehicle collisions while maintaining natural migration routes through forested landscapes. The project also includes boundary fencing and other mitigation measures intended to guide animals towards designated crossing points rather than active traffic lanes.The Varanasi–Kolkata Expressway forms part of India’s broader effort to strengthen freight movement and improve travel efficiency across eastern states by linking Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
