Kolkata Green Hydrogen Push Gains Research Momentum
West Bengal’s push towards a hydrogen-based clean-energy economy is gaining another layer of research capacity, as a state-funded project at North Bengal University prepares to add advanced electrochemical testing infrastructure. The development matters beyond the campus: Kolkata is emerging as a key node in Bengal’s wider hydrogen ecosystem, with implications for industry, ports, energy infrastructure and future green jobs.
The university’s chemistry department has received ₹25 lakh under the West Bengal Fostering Infrastructure for Science & Technology scheme. The funding will support the purchase of a high-end electrochemical workstation along with research consumables for laboratory-scale work on materials that can improve green hydrogen production.An electrochemical workstation allows researchers to measure how materials behave during reactions involving electricity and chemical processes. In hydrogen research, such testing is important for studying catalysts and electrode materials used in processes such as water electrolysis. Better-performing materials could eventually help reduce the electricity, equipment and operating costs associated with hydrogen production.For Kolkata, the significance lies in how such research fits into a broader regional transition. West Bengal’s Green Hydrogen Policy identifies Kolkata and adjoining districts as potential parts of the hydrogen value chain, including the movement and use of hydrogen through existing gas infrastructure. The policy also places hydrogen among technologies that could support the decarbonisation of sectors that are difficult to electrify directly.
The city already has an institutional base for this transition. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s national research roadmap has identified Kolkata’s Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science for work involving hydrogen evolution reactions and catalyst development. Research institutions in the city are therefore positioned to contribute to the materials and chemistry side of the emerging hydrogen economy.Infrastructure outside Kolkata also matters because a clean-energy economy cannot be built around the metropolitan area alone. Research capability in other parts of Bengal can widen the state’s scientific base, create skilled employment and allow technologies to be tested before they move towards industrial applicationsThere is also a commercial dimension. The national green hydrogen project database lists an announced green-ammonia project linked to Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata, while the Damodar Valley Corporation has pursued a techno-commercial feasibility exercise covering green hydrogen and carbon capture in West Bengal and Jharkhand.
The immediate challenge is moving from laboratory research to affordable, reliable deployment. For Kolkata and Bengal, that will require research institutions, energy infrastructure, skilled workers and industrial demand to develop together. The value of new research capacity will ultimately be measured not by equipment installed, but by whether it helps make cleaner energy practical at city.
