A 16-car Vande Bharat Express began a trial run between Yesvantpur and Mangaluru Central on September 5, with South Western Railway officials assessing operating timings and safety conditions on the route. The service, if introduced, would strengthen rail connectivity between Bengaluru and coastal Karnataka.
The Bengaluru division’s divisional railway manager shared a video of the train’s movement on the route through an official post on X. The post said the trial had commenced from Yesvantpur to assess the timings of the run.
The trial is being conducted on the approximately 360-kilometre Yesvantpur–Mangaluru Central rail route under South Western Railway. The train shown in the video is a white-and-blue Vande Bharat rake with 16 coaches.
According to the railway authority’s statement, senior officials and staff from operations, train control and telecommunications-related electrical functions, engineering and mechanical departments are monitoring operational and safety factors during the exercise. The assessment is intended to establish how the semi-high-speed train can operate on the route and how long the journey would take under the relevant operating conditions.
The proposed service would link Yesvantpur, a major railway terminal in Bengaluru, with Mangaluru Central on the Karnataka coast. The route passes through a geographically varied corridor, making track conditions, gradients, curves, signalling, electrification and operating schedules important considerations before any regular service can begin. The supplied announcement did not provide a timetable, fare structure, stoppage list or launch date for passenger operations.
The trial follows the expansion of Vande Bharat services across India since the series was introduced in 2019.
