Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Outpaces Rajdhani in Speed, Comfort
In a major leap for Indian Railways, the sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train has surpassed the Rajdhani Express in speed, comfort, and safety, marking a significant milestone in the country’s rail transport sector. The trial run of the much-anticipated Vande Bharat sleeper train, which took place between Ahmedabad and Mumbai Central on Wednesday, has set new standards for long-distance travel in India.
The Vande Bharat sleeper train is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 160 km/h, boasting impressive acceleration and deceleration that considerably reduce travel time. The design optimisations, including advanced couplers and better ride quality features, ensure a smoother, more comfortable journey than the Rajdhani Express. The trial run, conducted at a speed of 130 km/h, demonstrated the potential for even faster travel once fully operational. The train’s interiors are designed for maximum comfort on overnight journeys, with ample space for linen storage and 38 special berths reserved for attendants. The 16-coach train includes 11 AC-3 tier coaches, 4 AC-2 tier coaches, and 1 First AC coach, offering a wide range of seating options. Each coach is equipped with modern amenities such as foldable snack tables, charging points for laptops and mobile devices, integrated lighting systems, and braille navigation aids for visually impaired passengers.
Passengers will also appreciate the new design for sleeping berths, which offer improved comfort compared to previous models. With innovative features like ladders for easier access to upper berths and fully sealed gangways, the Vande Bharat sleeper prioritises passenger convenience. Additionally, the self-propelled train has driver cabins at both ends, eliminating the need for a separate locomotive and allowing for faster turnaround times at stations. The sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train also takes safety seriously. It includes advanced crash buffers, deformation tubes, and improved fire safety standards, which exceed those of the existing Rajdhani trains. The train’s build features austenitic steel for enhanced durability and safety, and its automatic entry and exit doors offer a modern, efficient approach to passenger movement.
The AC First Class coach boasts luxurious bio-vacuum toilets with touch-free fittings and even a shower cubicle, taking long-distance travel to an entirely new level of comfort. The passenger experience is further enhanced by smooth connectivity between coaches and state-of-the-art air conditioning that ensures a dust-free and pleasant environment throughout the journey. The trial run saw the Vande Bharat sleeper train complete the distance between Ahmedabad and Mumbai Central in just 6 hours and 21 minutes, arriving at 1:50 PM. The train departed Mumbai Central at 2:45 PM for its return journey, continuing its testing phase. Following the successful trial, the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) will conduct further analysis before issuing final certification. With its sleek design, modern amenities, and superior safety features, the Vande Bharat sleeper train is poised to redefine long-distance travel in India. Once introduced, it will offer a transformative travel experience that combines modern technology, comfort, and the highest safety standards, making it a true game-changer for Indian Railways.
