Vadhvan Port Chemical Park Plan Targets Up to 5,000 Acres

Maharashtra has announced plans for a mega chemical industry park near Vadhvan Port, with the state proposing to allot between 2,500 and 5,000 acres for the project and seeking approval from the Centre under its Grand Chemical Park scheme.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the proposal at the inauguration of India Chem 2026 in Goregaon. He said the state government was preparing an independent policy to promote investment in the chemical sector, which is expected to be announced in the first week of November.

The proposed park would be located near Vadhvan Port in Dahanu taluka, an area that was previously designated as ecologically sensitive under the Environment Protection Act, 1986. The announcement places industrial expansion and environmental clearance at the centre of the project’s approval process.

Fadnavis said the port could support the development of infrastructure and industrial clusters for chemical industries in its vicinity. He also said Maharashtra was working to attract large investments through the Grand Chemical Park scheme and simplify approvals for businesses.

The state plans to use the Maitri one-stop platform and the Invest Maharashtra initiative to provide services and permits through a single-window mechanism. Fadnavis said the chemical industry currently provides three lakh jobs in Maharashtra and has the potential to double employment opportunities in the state.

Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister J P Nadda said the Centre had announced the Grand Chemical Park scheme in the Union Budget, with central support of Rs 1,000 crore and a state contribution of Rs 500 crore. The scheme requires a minimum land area of 2,000 acres, while the Centre will facilitate environmental clearances, he said.

Nadda said the advanced chemicals and petrochemicals sector had also been included in the Centre’s Rs 1 lakh crore research, development and innovation scheme. The proposed Vadhvan Port-linked park will now depend on the state’s formal proposal, central approval, land allocation and the environmental clearance process.
