UP Crosses 9 Lakh Rooftop Solar Installations, Adds 3,000 MW

Uttar Pradesh has crossed nine lakh rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, adding more than 3,000 megawatts of solar capacity across the state, officials said on Thursday. The installation drive is also creating a large service network involving vendors, equipment suppliers, transporters and maintenance providers.

According to the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), the state is currently adding around 9 to 10 MW of domestic rooftop solar capacity every day. UPNEDA director Ravinder Singh said the pace is close to Australia’s average of 10.4 MW per day recorded during the first half of 2026.

The programme has generated more than one lakh direct employment opportunities, Singh said. These jobs have been created through a network of over 9,500 registered vendors engaged in installation, equipment supply, transportation and maintenance of rooftop solar systems.

The PM Surya Ghar scheme provides financial support to eligible households. Under the programme, households in Uttar Pradesh can receive combined Central and state subsidies of up to Rs 1.08 lakh for installing rooftop solar systems. Applications can be submitted until March 31, 2027.

Officials estimated that the installed capacity of 3,000 MW could generate around 1.35 crore units of electricity every day. The estimate is based on average generation of 4.5 units per kilowatt. At an indicative tariff of Rs 6.50 per unit, the electricity generated would be worth approximately Rs 8.78 crore daily, or around Rs 3,202 crore annually.

The figures indicate the scale at which household rooftops are being integrated into the state’s electricity system. Unlike a centralised solar park, rooftop generation places power-producing assets close to electricity consumers, while also making installation quality, maintenance and distribution-grid integration important operational requirements.

The estimated electricity value is not the same as a guaranteed saving for every household. Actual generation and savings will depend on weather conditions, system efficiency and the tariff applicable to each consumer. Household consumption patterns and the performance of individual systems will also determine how much generated power is used or supplied to the grid.

UPNEDA’s figures also point to the administrative structure behind the rollout. The scheme depends not only on subsidy disbursal but on a functioning vendor network capable of installing systems at scale and maintaining them after commissioning. The participation of more than 9,500 registered vendors gives the programme a substantial local delivery base.

With applications open until March 31, 2027, the next phase of the programme will involve continued household enrolment, installation and system maintenance. The state’s daily addition of 9 to 10 MW remains the immediate measure of implementation progress.
