The Ujjain-Garoth four-lane highway, a key infrastructure project aimed at boosting connectivity in the region, is now 90% complete. This ambitious project is set to revolutionize travel between Ujjain and key cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Vadodara once it is finished, improving not only connectivity but also travel efficiency.
Spanning 160 kilometers, the highway, developed with a budget of Rs 2,660 crore, is expected to reduce travel times significantly. Once completed, vehicles will be able to travel at speeds exceeding 100 km/h, cutting down on both fuel consumption and travel duration. The final phase of the project involves the construction of a railway overbridge in Ujjain and some minor work up to Kheda Khajuria, expected to be finished in the next three months. In addition to improving local travel, the highway will provide a direct link to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, further enhancing the region’s connectivity and strengthening the transportation network. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already approved an extension of the project to connect Shamgarh, which will further improve access for commuters.
Work on the project began in November 2022, under the supervision of NHAI, with three construction companies GHV, Ravi Infra, and MKC Infra assigned specific portions of the highway. Ravi Infra and MKC Infra have successfully completed their sections, but GHV faced delays due to land acquisition issues. Despite these setbacks, GHV is now accelerating work and is expected to finish the remaining 10% of the project soon. The original deadline for the entire project was set for July 2024. However, due to the delays faced by GHV, the completion date has been extended by 207 days. Authorities remain optimistic that the project will be completed within the next month, bringing this vital road infrastructure project closer to full operational status.
Once completed, the Ujjain-Garoth four-lane highway will be a major milestone in improving regional infrastructure, easing the commute for thousands of daily travelers, and boosting economic growth in the region.
