Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), designed to seamlessly connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India, has entered a decisive phase, marked by robust security upgrades and successful high-speed train trials.
The project, which stretches over 270 kilometres through some of the most difficult terrains in the Indian Himalayas, is poised to redefine connectivity, while responding with urgency to evolving security challenges. Recent incidents near Pahalgam have triggered a comprehensive security review, prompting a strategic rethink of the USBRL’s operational readiness. In an assertive move, railway and security officials have deployed enhanced safety measures along vulnerable stretches of the corridor, particularly those passing through remote regions beyond Reasi. These efforts signal a shift from traditional infrastructure delivery to an integrated approach that addresses both national connectivity and public safety.
Officials from the Government Railway Police (GRP), working in close coordination with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Jammu and Kashmir Police, and central paramilitary units, have rolled out a multi-tiered defence strategy. This includes 24×7 patrolling, intelligence surveillance, and deployment of advanced threat detection systems. Particular attention has been paid to the Chenab and Anji Khad bridges, two of the tallest and most iconic railway bridges globally, which now function as both engineering feats and strategic assets. To bolster physical security, these bridges have been outfitted with high-definition surveillance cameras, vibration sensors, and perimeter monitoring systems. Security forces, trained for high-risk terrain response, are stationed at these sites in rotational shifts to maintain uninterrupted vigilance.
In parallel, tactical ground teams have stepped up patrols across neighbouring settlements, highways, and approach roads. A network of new police stations and checkpoints has been commissioned at key junctions including Dugga, Sumber, Sangaldan, Kheri, Reasi, Bakkal, Sawlakote, and Banihal. These centres serve as rapid response hubs, strengthening the integration between civil law enforcement and railway operations. A centralised Zonal Signal Centre has also been established in Katra to streamline emergency communications and ensure real-time situational awareness across the network. These security upgrades come just as the Vande Bharat Express completed successful trial runs on the Katra to Sangaldan segment of the line. This indigenous semi-high-speed train has met all parameters for speed, safety, and commuter comfort. Designed for a maximum speed of 160 km/h, the train promises to slash travel times across the region, offering a faster, cleaner, and more efficient alternative to existing modes of transport.
The launch of regular services is pending final regulatory approvals, but expectations are high for its operational debut in the coming weeks. Officials overseeing the project noted that the train will dramatically improve accessibility within the Kashmir Valley, which has long faced logistical and mobility challenges due to its mountainous terrain and geopolitical sensitivity. Beyond the infrastructural and technological achievements, the USBRL initiative reflects a broader government vision—one where mobility serves as a tool for inclusive development, regional integration, and environmental sustainability. The project, powered in part by electrified rail operations, represents a pivot towards low-carbon mobility in a region with delicate ecosystems and limited road connectivity.
