Tirumala Cyclone Rain Triggers Major Pilgrim Safety Measures

Tirumala cyclone rain disrupted normal activity on Monday, prompting the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) to expand shelter, food, medical and road-safety arrangements for pilgrims at the hill shrine in Andhra Pradesh.

Persistent rain and falling temperatures left many devotees indoors or searching for available shelter. Several pilgrims reportedly took refuge under sheds and at commercial establishments as accommodation became difficult to find. Elderly devotees and children faced particular discomfort because of the cold and wet conditions.

TTD additional executive officer C.H. Venkayya Chowdary reviewed the arrangements with officials from various departments at the Padmavathi Guest House. He said comprehensive precautionary measures had been put in place to prevent cyclone-induced rain from causing inconvenience to devotees visiting Tirumala.

The directions focused on keeping the pilgrimage system functioning while reducing exposure to rain and slippery conditions. Officials were asked to speed up darshan, prevent queues from extending outside and maintain uninterrupted distribution of Annaprasadam. Tarpaulins were to be erected wherever necessary to protect devotees collecting food.

The TTD official also directed authorities to arrange safe accommodation in rooms and compartments for pilgrims affected by the weather. Officials were instructed to maintain uninterrupted power supply as the rain continued, adding an essential-services responsibility to the shrine administration’s response.

Safety measures were also ordered along the ghat roads leading to Tirumala. Engineering and vigilance teams were asked to strengthen protection in locations vulnerable to falling rocks. The directions are significant because the ghat roads form the principal access route for pilgrims and are exposed to weather-related hazards during periods of heavy rain.

Medical personnel were told to remain available to provide immediate assistance to devotees injured in slippery conditions. The TTD’s instructions indicate that the response extends beyond managing queues and accommodation to handling the risks created by wet walking surfaces and difficult movement around the hill shrine.

Chowdary stressed coordination between all departments to ensure safe and hassle-free darshan and to facilitate the safe return of devotees to their destinations. The arrangements cover the core services that pilgrims depend on during a weather disruption: access, shelter, food, electricity, medical assistance and road safety.
