Thane Municipal Corporation has intensified its Thane plastic ban enforcement, inspecting 75 establishments across three prabhag samiti areas, seizing 99 kilograms of prohibited single-use plastic and collecting ₹79,000 in fines, according to a report by Loksatta – Thane.
The action was conducted jointly by the civic body’s Pollution Control Department and Solid Waste Management Department. Special teams inspected markets, commercial establishments, hawkers and shops in the Majiwada-Manpada, Mumbra and Naupada-Kopri areas.
The civic teams found prohibited single-use plastic at several establishments and took punitive action against the concerned operators. The seized material was removed during the inspections, while fines were imposed on establishment owners.
In the Ghodbunder and Majiwada areas, teams inspected 35 establishments, seized 18 kilograms of plastic and imposed fines totalling ₹18,000. In Mumbra, 10 establishments were inspected, resulting in the seizure of 27 kilograms of plastic and the collection of ₹15,000 in fines.
The Naupada-Kopri prabhag samiti area accounted for the largest share of the reported seizure. Action was taken at 30 establishments, where 54 kilograms of prohibited plastic was seized and ₹46,000 in fines was collected.
The enforcement drive places the municipal corporation’s pollution control and solid waste management functions at the centre of efforts to limit single-use plastic entering Thane’s markets and commercial waste stream. The reported action covered both formal establishments and street-level commercial activity, including hawkers and shops.
The Pollution Control Department said the municipal corporation would continue taking action against single-use plastic. The department also said the campaign would remain ongoing, indicating that inspections and enforcement in the covered areas are expected to continue.
