A new six-lane bridge proposed across Thane Creek is expected to strengthen connectivity between Thane and Navi Mumbai, providing an alternative route to two of the region’s busiest crossings. The project is intended to ease growing traffic pressure, improve access to emerging economic hubs and support long-term mobility planning across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has initiated the procurement process for the proposed Thane Creek bridge, inviting bids for the construction of a cable-stayed crossing linking Kopri in Thane with Patni in Navi Mumbai. Designed as a 1.4-kilometre structure, the bridge is expected to become an important addition to the region’s transport network once completed, with construction estimated to take around three-and-a-half years.
The planned crossing will connect Mith Bandar Road near Thane railway station with the Airoli Knowledge City corridor, creating a direct road link between Thane Station Road and the busy Thane-Belapur Road. Transport planners believe this alignment will distribute traffic more efficiently by providing an alternative to the heavily used Airoli-Mulund and Kalwa creek bridges, both of which experience frequent congestion during peak commuting hours. The Thane Creek bridge is also being designed as part of a wider multimodal transport strategy rather than as a standalone infrastructure project. Future integration with the proposed Thane Coastal Road and the elevated corridor leading to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to create a seamless travel corridor connecting residential neighbourhoods, business districts, logistics hubs and aviation infrastructure. Traffic assessments undertaken during project planning indicate sustained growth in vehicle movement across the eastern metropolitan corridor. Existing creek crossings already carry substantial commuter and freight traffic each day, while continued expansion of information technology parks, industrial clusters and logistics facilities along the Thane-Belapur Road is expected to generate additional transport demand over the coming decades.
Urban mobility experts note that creating multiple crossing points across natural barriers such as Thane Creek can improve network resilience by reducing dependence on a limited number of transport links. Diversifying travel routes may also help minimise congestion-related emissions, improve journey reliability and support more balanced economic development across the metropolitan region. The cable-stayed design has been selected not only for its engineering suitability but also for its potential to establish a recognisable urban landmark. Infrastructure planners increasingly view major transport projects as opportunities to combine functionality with public realm improvements, particularly at strategic city gateways that shape first impressions for visitors and investors.
