Thane Bans POP Idols, Encourages Eco-Friendly Ganeshotsav

In a significant step towards fostering environmental sustainability, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has banned the sale of Plaster of Paris (POP) idols in Thane. This move, aimed at promoting eco-friendly celebrations, will be enforced during Ganeshotsav and other festivals, in line with directives from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and the Union Department of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change.

The ban on POP idols is part of TMC’s larger effort to reduce environmental damage during festivals. Under the new guidelines, only biodegradable materials, such as clay, wood, and natural fibers, will be allowed for idol creation. Idol makers and sellers must now submit an undertaking to TMC, confirming that their idols are made from eco-friendly materials, with special emphasis on Shadu soil. To make this initiative more effective, the municipality has encouraged devotees to buy idols only from authorized vendors approved by TMC. These approved vendors will be required to display a prominent board (3×5 feet) stating, “Eco-friendly idols available here.” This initiative aims to limit pollution caused by non-biodegradable materials, particularly during the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

The TMC has also laid down specific guidelines for idol immersion. As part of the new regulations, all idols must be immersed in designated artificial lakes, residential complex tanks, or at municipality-operated collection centres. Moreover, idol makers must seek approval from the ward office to set up stalls. Only certified idol artists using eco-friendly materials will be allowed to craft idols in the designated areas. In addition, mandals (celebration groups) are required to ensure that their idols are coloured using turmeric, sandalwood, and ocher. Only eco-friendly puja materials like flowers and clothes should be used, and metal or glass plates and bowls should replace plastic. The use of single-use plastic is strictly prohibited. Mandals must submit their idol immersion plans to TMC at least a month in advance to ensure compliance with the regulations.

To further promote eco-friendly festivities, the TMC will provide free municipal space to artisans using Shadu soil or other eco-friendly materials. The available spaces will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, and applicants must apply by March 31, 2025. This space will be provided until October 1, 2025, after which it must be vacated. Artisans are responsible for arranging their own sheds, electricity, and water supply. By enforcing these measures, TMC aims to make Ganeshotsav a more environmentally responsible celebration without compromising on the traditional essence of the festival. The municipality is hopeful that these initiatives will lead to less pollution, fewer environmental hazards, and a more sustainable future for Thane’s residents.
