Telangana Wins Centre’s Nod for Major Roads, Bridge and Ropeways

Telangana has secured in-principle approval from the Union road transport and highways ministry for a package of road, bridge, elevated corridor and ropeway projects, including an elevated link between LB Nagar and Hayathnagar and the expansion of NH-65, Roads and Buildings minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy said after a meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The proposed LB Nagar–Hayathnagar elevated corridor is intended to address growing congestion in Hyderabad’s rapidly developing eastern corridor. The minister said Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari approved the proposal during discussions attended by Telangana tourism minister Jupally Krishna Rao, MP Mallu Ravi, government whip Beerla Ilaiah and officials.

Gadkari also assured the Telangana delegation that the tendering process for the expansion of NH-65 would be completed in November, with construction scheduled to begin in January 2027. The report does not specify the length, estimated cost or detailed design of the proposed expansion.

Another major proposal is an iconic cable-stayed bridge across the Krishna river on NH-167K, connecting Somasila and Sangameswar. According to Komatireddy, the bridge could shorten the route to Tirupati by about 80 km and reduce travel time by nearly three hours. The project is also expected to improve access to the Somasila temple and support tourism in the surrounding area.

The Union minister responded positively to a proposal for an elevated corridor along the Hyderabad–Srisailam stretch of NH-765 and directed officials to prepare a fresh detailed project report. A DPR is generally required to establish a project’s technical scope, cost and implementation requirements before construction decisions are finalised.

The discussions also covered five ropeways in Telangana under the Parvatmala scheme. The state government has said the ropeways would improve access to major tourist destinations, create local employment and support economic activity in surrounding areas. The report does not identify the proposed ropeway locations or provide their timelines.

Gadkari also responded positively to a proposed Hyderabad–Amaravati greenfield highway, which Telangana says would strengthen road connectivity between the state and Andhra Pradesh. Under the Setu Bandhan scheme, three road overbridges were approved in Telangana to reduce waiting times at railway level crossings and improve road safety for motorists.

Komatireddy sought central assistance under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund for 34 road projects across Telangana. The Union minister directed officials to take the necessary steps on those proposals. The state also requested that highways connecting Pullur, Alampur, Jatrapole, Pentlavelli, Kollapur, Lingala, Achampet, Dindi, Devarakonda, Mallepalli and Nalgonda be upgraded to national highways.

The announcements place Hyderabad’s eastern growth corridor, interstate travel and access to tourism destinations within a wider state infrastructure programme. However, the projects remain at different stages: some have received in-principle approval, one requires a fresh DPR, and others still involve administrative and funding steps. The immediate milestones cited by the state are the NH-65 tendering process in November and the planned start of construction in January 2027. Komatireddy also invited Gadkari to attend the Indian Road Congress, scheduled in Hyderabad from November 19 to 22.
