Telangana Drought Relief Push Gains Urgency as 358 Mandals Reel

Telangana’s drought response is set to come under pressure at an all-party meeting convened by the state government, with the BJP planning to demand the immediate declaration of drought-hit mandals and compensation for affected farmers. The meeting is scheduled at the Secretariat on Wednesday and will examine the impact of El Niño, deficient rainfall and worsening water stress across the state.

The BJP delegation will include Legislature Party leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy and MLC Malka Komuraiah, acting on the directions of state BJP president N. Ramchander Rao. The party has said it will place its suggestions before the government while keeping farmers’ welfare and drinking-water requirements at the centre of the discussion.

According to the report, the party’s demands will cover several linked pressures: shortages of irrigation water, power cuts, crop losses and the drinking-water crisis. These issues are connected in Telangana’s drought conditions because farming depends on assured irrigation and electricity for water supply, while declining availability also affects households and local administrations.

Preliminary assessments have identified 358 mandals as drought-affected. The state has 33 districts, of which 18 have recorded deficient rainfall, according to the information cited in the report. Groundwater conditions have been described as critical in 324 mandals, indicating that the stress is not limited to surface reservoirs or individual farming locations.

The meeting is expected to discuss water conservation, irrigation power supply, crop planning and drought-prevention measures. The proposed declaration of drought-hit mandals would be a significant administrative step because it would formally identify areas requiring targeted relief and intervention. The report, however, does not specify the government’s proposed compensation amounts, the criteria for declaring a mandal drought-affected or the timeline for disbursing assistance.

The scale of the preliminary assessment also places drinking-water security alongside agricultural relief as a central governance issue. A drought response limited to crop compensation would not address the wider pressures created by deficient rainfall and stressed groundwater. The meeting’s agenda therefore spans both rural livelihoods and essential water access, with decisions on conservation, supply and planning likely to determine how local administrations respond.

The BJP said its pressure over the water shortage, power cuts, crop losses and drinking-water crisis had contributed to the government convening the all-party meeting. The government’s position and its response to the demands were not included in the report.

The immediate administrative milestones are the all-party meeting, the consideration of drought declarations for affected mandals and decisions on compensation, water conservation, irrigation power supply, crop planning and drought-prevention measures.
