Telangana has disengaged 3,895 Anganwadi teachers and helpers over the last two years, while 46 former workers continue to await cumulative service benefits worth Rs.29 lakh, according to a report by Telangana Today. Officials attributed the delay to incorrect bank account details and said the payment issues would be resolved at the earliest.
The figures highlight continuing administrative pressure around Anganwadi centres, which serve as frontline public-service institutions for communities across the state. The pending payments include benefits due to workers who have left service, while the government has also not fulfilled an election promise to raise the monthly salaries of Anganwadi teachers and workers to Rs.18,000.
The Congress had made the salary commitment in its manifesto before the Assembly elections. However, nearly three years after the promise, the increase has not been implemented, the report said. Anganwadi teachers and helpers staged protests last year at the Chief Minister’s residence in Kodangal and at the Secretariat, seeking action on their long-pending demands.
The service-benefit structure has changed several times. In 2017, Anganwadi teachers were entitled to an end-of-service benefit of Rs.60,000, while helpers and mini Anganwadi teachers were entitled to Rs.30,000. In 2023, the amounts were increased to Rs.1 lakh for teachers and Rs.50,000 for helpers and mini Anganwadi teachers. They were subsequently enhanced to Rs.2 lakh and Rs.1 lakh, respectively.
Despite these revisions, 46 teachers and helpers have reportedly been waiting for their cumulative benefits for two years. The pending amount is Rs.29 lakh, according to the report. The delay leaves the state’s payment system dependent on the correction of basic beneficiary records, including bank account information.
A separate set of payments is pending for families of deceased Anganwadi workers. As many as 130 family members applied during 2025-26 for funeral assistance. The assistance is fixed at Rs.20,000 for the families of Anganwadi teachers and Rs.10,000 for the families of helpers, according to the report.
Officials said incorrect bank account numbers had delayed the payments and that the details were being rectified. They said all the issues would be fixed at the earliest. The next step is the correction of the account information and release of the pending service and funeral benefits.
