Tamil Nadu Heavy Rain Hits Several Districts as Northeast Monsoon Begins

Tamil Nadu heavy rain was reported across several districts on October 15 as the northeast monsoon began over the state, with the weather centre warning of intense rainfall in Coimbatore, the Nilgiris and other areas over the next two days.

The rain was reported in Palani in Dindigul district, Sathankulam in Thoothukudi district, Tiruchirappalli, Theni and Tiruppur, among other locations. The report also mentioned rainfall in several parts of Coimbatore, where heavy showers continued for more than two hours on Thursday night.

Rainfall measurements recorded at different locations included 10.8 cm at Velarasigapalayam and 10.3 cm at Kannanur in Tiruchirappalli. Thimmarasanaickanur recorded 8.9 cm, Kandiyan Koil recorded 9.6 cm, Thottiyapalayam recorded 8.1 cm, Chettikurichi recorded 9.32 cm and Sithampoondi recorded 8.7 cm. Goundampalayam recorded 1.72 cm.

The northeast monsoon is a major source of seasonal rainfall for Tamil Nadu and has direct implications for city roads, drainage systems, public transport and low-lying neighbourhoods. However, the report did not provide details of flooding, traffic disruption, damage or evacuations in the affected locations.

The weather centre had warned that heavy rain was likely in Coimbatore, the Nilgiris and other districts during the following two days. The forecast places additional importance on local monitoring as rainfall spreads across both urban and rural areas, particularly where drainage capacity is limited.

Further rainfall observations and official advisories over the next two days will determine the extent of the weather system’s impact across Tamil Nadu.
