Tamil Nadu Government Jobs Get Five-Year Age Limit Relief

The Tamil Nadu government has raised the upper age limit for direct recruitment to government services by five years across all recruitment boards, providing a fresh opportunity for candidates who risked becoming ineligible because of recruitment delays. The revised limits take effect from October 30, 2026, and will remain in force for five years, according to a government statement reported by the Times of India.

The decision was announced by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay after long-pending demands from government job aspirants. The government said the measure would support candidates who had crossed, or were close to crossing, existing age limits while waiting for recruitment notifications and examinations.

The five-year increase will apply in addition to existing age relaxations for candidates from the BC, BC(M), MBC and DNC, SC, ST and destitute widow categories. Disabled candidates will also receive the revised benefit under the new framework.

For Group-I posts, the upper age limit for general-category candidates has increased from 32 to 37 years. The limit for reserved-category candidates has been raised to 42 years, while disabled candidates will be eligible to apply up to the age of 52 years.

For Group-II and Group-IIA posts, the upper age limit for general-category candidates has been raised to 35 years. Reserved-category candidates for these posts will continue to have no maximum age limit, according to the details reported by the newspaper.

The revised limits also cover Group-IV recruitment. BC and MBC candidates without higher qualifications will now be eligible up to the age of 37 years, while the upper age limit for SC and ST candidates has been extended to 40 years.

The change directly affects the recruitment window available to candidates seeking entry into the state administration. Government recruitment examinations are conducted through different recruitment boards and cover posts across the state’s public services. By applying the increase across all recruitment boards, the government has linked the measure to the wider recruitment process rather than to a single examination or department.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of concerns among aspirants who faced disqualification as recruitment schedules were delayed. The government statement said the decision was intended to address those demands and provide another opportunity to candidates who would otherwise have exceeded the earlier age limits.

The revised framework will remain effective for five years from October 30, 2026. Details of how the updated limits will be applied to individual recruitment notifications and examinations will determine the eligibility of candidates for upcoming selections.
