Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is set to attend the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, from January 18 to 22, 2027, in a move that could give the state’s investment-promotion efforts a stronger political focus. The visit was reported by the Times of India based on information from sources.
Vijay’s participation follows an invitation from WEF president and chief executive officer Alois Zwinggi and managing director Maroun Kairouz, according to the report. The annual meeting is expected to bring together representatives of more than 100 governments, 1,000 leading global companies, international organisations, civil society, academia and the media.
The World Economic Forum meeting is used by governments and businesses to discuss global economic issues, investment opportunities and emerging sectors. For Tamil Nadu, the chief minister’s proposed attendance would mark a more prominent role for the state’s political leadership in conversations around investment promotion and industrial policy.
“For Tamil Nadu, the chief minister’s participation in the 2027 meeting could signal a change in the state’s Davos strategy, with political leadership taking a more prominent role in investment promotion and industrial policy discussions by deputing the CM to attend,” an official was quoted as saying in the report.
Tamil Nadu has maintained a visible presence at Davos in recent years, with former industries minister T R B Rajaa representing the state on more than one occasion. At the 2024 World Economic Forum meeting, the state delegation held more than 50 meetings with global leaders, investors and industry partners. Discussions covered automobiles, electronics, renewable energy, global capability centres, healthcare, life sciences and advanced manufacturing.
The state also participated in the 2025 meeting, where its delegation promoted the “Bullish on Tamil Nadu” campaign. The pitch highlighted Tamil Nadu’s manufacturing base, electronics and automobile sectors, renewable-energy potential, skilling initiatives and plans to develop a technology-ready workforce.
Tamil Nadu was among six Indian states that participated in the event. Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh were the other states named in the report. Their participation reflects the intensifying competition among Indian states to attract capital and establish themselves as locations for emerging industries.
The proposed visit also comes as the TVK government prepares to unveil a new industrial policy. The government has announced an ambitious target of creating a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036, with investment, exports and technological advancement identified as key growth drivers.
The 2027 Davos meeting will therefore provide a platform for Tamil Nadu to present its industrial capabilities and policy priorities directly to global companies and institutional stakeholders.
