Surat Police Probe Sought Over ‘Rent a Garba Partner’ Offers

Surat BJP MP Mukesh Dalal has sought a police and cybercrime inquiry into viral social media posts offering “Rent a Garba Partner” services during Navratri, citing possible fraud, misrepresentation and violations of law.

In a written representation to the Surat police commissioner, Dalal asked authorities to investigate the origin of the posts and identify the individuals or organisations behind them. He also urged police to take appropriate action if the inquiry establishes any legal violations.

According to the complaint, the posts advertise three packages priced at Rs 1,000 for Silver, Rs 1,500 for Gold and Rs 2,000 for Platinum. The reported offerings include a garba partner, dancing together and the creation of photographs or social media reels.

Dalal said Navratri is a significant religious and cultural festival, with large numbers of young people participating in garba events across Surat. He argued that the advertised services appeared to commercialise participation in the festival and asked authorities to examine the intent and legality of the posts.

The MP specifically requested that the Cybercrime wing verify whether the offers involve illegal activity, fraud, misrepresentation or attempts to deceive members of the public. He also asked police to trace those responsible for circulating the content and initiate proceedings if violations are found.

The complaint places the issue within a wider digital-safety challenge facing residents who respond to online offers without knowing who operates them or whether the advertised service exists. The reported packages involve advance payments and personal interaction, making verification of the organisers and terms of the offer a central part of the proposed inquiry.

Dalal appealed to citizens to exercise caution while responding to such social media posts. He advised people not to make payments without verification and to report suspicious content promptly to local police or the Cybercrime police.

The police response and the outcome of any cybercrime examination will determine whether the posts amount to a legal violation, misleading representation or an unauthorised commercial activity. No enforcement action or finding of wrongdoing has been reported at this stage.
