Stray dogs are creating safety concerns for residents, tourists and road users around Vypin’s beaches, bus stops and public roads, with local panchayats yet to resolve the problem, according to a report by Mathrubhumi – Kochi.
The report said packs of stray dogs are frequently seen along the beaches and state highways in the Vypin area. Visitors to the beaches at Edavanakkad, Kuzhuppilly and Munambam are reportedly walking with concern because of the dogs. The animals are also gathering outside commercial establishments and at bus stops, making pedestrians uneasy.
The problem has been reported particularly around Munambam Muziris Beach, the harbour, nearby public roads and surrounding areas. Visitors arriving at the beach with children are said to be especially apprehensive. The dogs also pose a concern for people visiting a nearby temple, according to the report.
Residents told the publication that the risk increases in the evening, when dogs move onto the beach road and footpaths. Two-wheeler users face additional danger as the animals sometimes run across the road. The report said several people have been involved in accidents after dogs jumped or ran in front of vehicles.
The issue is not limited to tourist areas. Severe stray-dog activity has also been reported in the Thamaravattam area of eastern Edavanakkad. The concentration of dogs near public spaces, transport points, commercial areas and roads has widened the concern beyond individual incidents and placed the responsibility for response on the local panchayats.
Residents and visitors are seeking intervention from the concerned panchayats to address the problem. The Mathrubhumi report did not provide details of any specific control programme, official response or implementation timeline from the local authorities.
