NTPC Opens 26% Stake Bids for Industrial Co-Generation Projects

NTPC has invited Expressions of Interest from commercial and industrial entities seeking to acquire a 26 per cent equity stake in proposed co-generation projects that would supply industries with steam and electricity through integrated power solutions.

The power utility said the initiative will explore co-generation facilities designed around the requirements of industrial users. The proposed solutions may combine coal, renewable energy and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), alongside long-term power supply arrangements.

Co-generation produces steam and electricity through an integrated system. For industries that require both forms of energy, the model can combine power generation and process-heat supply within one arrangement. NTPC said the initiative is intended to provide reliable, economical and sustainable energy solutions while addressing the varied requirements of commercial and industrial consumers.

The invitation comes as industrial users place greater emphasis on energy security, cost optimisation and sustainability, according to the statement issued by NTPC. The company said the proposed projects would allow it to work more closely with industrial partners and expand its portfolio of energy solutions beyond conventional electricity generation.

NTPC’s model will involve industrial entities taking a 26 per cent equity position in the co-generation projects. The statement did not specify the locations, project capacities, investment size, participating industries or timelines for commissioning. It also did not provide details of the number of projects that may be developed under the initiative.

The proposed use of multiple energy sources reflects the company’s broader expansion into integrated power and energy services. Along with coal, renewable energy and storage, NTPC has entered areas including e-mobility, waste-to-energy, nuclear power and green hydrogen solutions.

NTPC said the initiative is intended to strengthen partnerships with industries and support industrial growth while contributing to energy efficiency, sustainability and energy-transition objectives. The company’s role in the projects will draw on its power-generation expertise and its planned expansion across thermal, hydro, solar and wind generation.

NTPC is India’s largest integrated power utility, with an installed capacity of more than 91 GW and over 35 GW under construction, according to the company information included in the announcement. It has set a target of reaching 149 GW of total capacity by 2032, including 60 GW from renewable energy sources.

The next step is for interested commercial and industrial entities to respond to NTPC’s Expression of Interest. Further project details, including the selected partners, locations, capacity and implementation schedule, are expected to emerge through the bidding process.
