Steam Locomotive Gets Modern Makeover with Smoke Simulation

The Ashokapuram Railway Workshop has unveiled a static steam locomotive that now boasts simulated smoke, a whistling sound, and the iconic chugging noise of yesteryears. This initiative, timed to coincide with Independence Day, is designed to offer a nostalgic experience to visitors by bringing the classic steam engine back to life.

The transformation involves fitting the historic locomotive with electronically controlled equipment capable of producing simulated smoke and sound effects. This modernisation effort aims to provide a more immersive experience, allowing spectators to engage with the locomotive beyond its static display. The simulated smoke, resembling stage effects used in theatrical performances, enhances the authenticity of the locomotive’s historic presence.

The Deputy Chief Workshop Manager outlined that the simulated effects will be remotely controlled and are scheduled to activate three times per hour. The primary objective is to recreate the sensory experience of steam locomotion, providing visitors with a tangible connection to the past. For now, these simulations will be showcased on Sundays and during special events or public holidays, reflecting the workshop’s commitment to preserving and promoting railway heritage. The steam locomotive in question was originally acquired by the Mysore State Railway from London in 1926 at a cost of Rs1.65 lakh. It served the Mysuru – Bengaluru and Bengaluru – Bangarpet routes, transporting countless passengers over nearly six decades before its retirement in 1983. Post-retirement, the locomotive has been preserved at the Ashokapuram Workshop, where it has been displayed as a static exhibit.

This innovative approach, spearheaded by Chief Workshop Manager O.P. Shaw, aims to reinvigorate interest in railway history and provide a dynamic museum experience. By integrating modern technology with historical preservation, the workshop seeks to engage and educate the public about the legacy of steam locomotives in a memorable and interactive manner.
