Southern Railway Adds Two Chennai–Mangaluru Special Train Round Trips for Onam Rush

Southern Railway will run two additional round trips between Dr MGR Chennai Central and Mangaluru Junction on August 21–22 and August 28–29 to handle festival passenger demand. Trains 06127/06128 will operate as “Trains on Demand”, with reservations scheduled to open at 8 am on August 19.

Southern Railway has announced another temporary capacity addition on the Chennai–Mangaluru corridor, introducing two round trips of a weekly express special ahead of the Onam travel period.

Train No. 06127 Dr MGR Chennai Central–Mangaluru Junction Weekly Express Special will leave Chennai Central at 11.50 pm on August 21 and August 28, both Fridays, and reach Mangaluru Junction at 5 pm the following day.

In the return direction, Train No. 06128 Mangaluru Junction–Dr MGR Chennai Central Weekly Express Special will depart Mangaluru Junction at 7.15 pm on August 22 and August 29, both Saturdays, and arrive at Chennai Central at 11.35 am the next day.

Southern Railway has designated the pair as Trains on Demand, indicating that the services are temporary additions intended to absorb exceptional passenger demand rather than a permanent alteration to the regular timetable. The railway said advance reservations for the specials would open at 8 am on August 19.

The trains will provide one AC two-tier coach, two AC three-tier coaches, 12 sleeper-class coaches, four general second-class coaches and two luggage-cum-brake vans.

Commercial halts are scheduled at Arakkonam, Katpadi, Jolarpettai, Salem, Erode, Tiruppur, Podanur, Palakkad, Shoranur, Tirur, Kozhikode, Vadakara, Thalassery, Kannur, Payyanur, Nileshwar, Kanhangad and Kasaragod, giving the service a substantial intermediate role across Tamil Nadu and Kerala rather than functioning only as an end-to-end Chennai–Mangaluru connection.

The additional pair forms part of a wider festival-season capacity programme. Southern Railway has already notified 112 Onam special train trips across multiple corridors during the August 14–September 6 festival period.
