South Delhi Junctions Record 34,000 Traffic Violations Every Hour

South Delhi’s Govindpuri and Kotla Mubarakpur junctions are recording more than 34,000 traffic-rule violations every hour, according to a recent study by the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), highlighting the scale of unsafe movement at two heavily used intersections.

The study found that approximately 26,000 vehicles pass through the Govindpuri junction every hour, resulting in an estimated 16,791 violations. At Kotla Mubarakpur, around 24,000 vehicles move through the junction hourly, with about 17,931 violations recorded. Together, the two locations account for more than 34,000 reported violations in an hour.

The violations include jumping traffic signals, driving on the wrong side of the road and ignoring lane discipline. The findings come as construction activity in several parts of Delhi continues to affect traffic movement, while congestion at junctions and intersections has intensified because of unsafe road use.

IRTE presented the findings at a recently held national seminar, where it also raised concerns about road-safety risks, work-related challenges, delivery pressure and what it described as indifference within the existing legal and regulatory framework. The study focused specifically on the two South Delhi junctions and was intended to show the unsafe behaviour and safety deficiencies present at busy urban intersections.

IRTE president Dr Rohit Baluja said authorities should identify risks before crashes occur instead of analysing them only after a fatal incident. He said traffic and related departments should systematically study near-misses, unsafe driving, conflict points and other hazardous conditions linked to traffic movement.

The warning signs identified by the organisation include improper overtaking, dangerous lane changes, insufficient distance between vehicles and failure to respect the right of way. These behaviours can be measured and used to identify locations where interventions may be required before a serious crash takes place.

According to the study’s findings, a scientific assessment of junction conditions could help determine whether a location needs improved traffic engineering, road-user training, regulatory intervention or stronger enforcement. The report did not announce a specific action plan for Govindpuri or Kotla Mubarakpur, and the next steps will depend on the response of traffic and other concerned departments.
