Sonbhadra Property Freeze Targets House Linked to Drug Trade

Sonbhadra Police have frozen a residential property valued at Rs 23.86 lakh belonging to Deepak Kumar Bharti, an accused in a narcotics trafficking case, after authorities determined that the asset was acquired from proceeds of the illegal drug trade.

The action was carried out by Shaktinagar police on October 24 under an order dated October 21. The freezing order was approved by the competent and adjudicating authority under the Department of Revenue in the Union finance ministry, New Delhi, in case number NDPSA/FO/1305/DAL/2026.

Police formally affixed a notice informing residents and visitors about the order on the property under Section 68F of Chapter V-A of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. A freeze prevents the property from being dealt with or transferred while proceedings under the law continue.

The action forms part of Sonbhadra district police’s campaign against narcotics trafficking and assets allegedly acquired through the illegal drug trade. Police said Bharti is an accused in multiple cases registered across the district under Sections 68E and 68F of the NDPS Act.

The reported cases include a codeine-based cough syrup case registered at Robertsganj police station and another case involving heroin. The police account also referred to property worth Rs 4.5 crore in connection with the codeine-based cough syrup case and assets worth Rs 38.83 lakh in the district-wide enforcement campaign.

The latest action is therefore not limited to a single criminal investigation. It uses the property-attachment provisions of the NDPS Act to target assets that authorities say are connected to narcotics proceeds. The law allows agencies to identify and freeze property suspected to have been acquired through illicit drug activity, subject to the relevant statutory process and adjudication.

According to the police account, Sonbhadra authorities have frozen or seized property worth Rs 5.56 crore across six cases. The reported figure covers the district’s wider enforcement action and includes properties linked to narcotics cases beyond the Rs 23.86 lakh house targeted in the latest order.

The notice at the Shaktinagar residence marks the local enforcement step following approval of the freezing order. Further action will depend on the proceedings under the NDPS Act and directions issued by the competent authority in the case.
