In a bid to mitigate the risks associated with accidents on the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway (NH 44), authorities have rolled out a pioneering initiative involving the installation of automated signages at identified black spots.
These signages, powered by small LED projectors, are strategically positioned between Walajah town in Ranipet and Tirupattur district to address safety concerns, particularly during night-time travel. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), spearheading this endeavour, acknowledges the significance of warning motorists about potential hazards, especially in areas prone to fatal accidents. Recognising the limitations of conventional warning signages, which are effective primarily during daylight hours, the introduction of automated LED projectors marks a paradigm shift in highway safety protocols. By leveraging technology to deliver real-time alerts to drivers, particularly during low visibility conditions, the initiative aims to avert potential accidents and safeguard the lives of commuters traversing the bustling Chennai-Bengaluru corridor. The automated signages, strategically positioned along the median of the highway, relay essential messages such as ‘go slow’, ‘don’t drink and drive’, and ‘obey traffic rules’ to motorists, thereby reinforcing adherence to safe driving practices. Each LED projector, spaced at intervals of 25 meters, ensures comprehensive coverage of identified black spots along the highway, spanning Ranipet, Vellore, and Tirupattur districts. Notable locations earmarked for signage installation include Walajah, Konavattam, Melmanoor, Pachakuppam, Velakalnatham, and Valayambattu bridge, among others, encompassing critical junctures where accidents are frequently reported. Crucially, the automated projectors operate in tandem with existing street lighting infrastructure, utilising power supplied by local authorities. Their operational window, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., aligns with the nocturnal operation of street lights, ensuring seamless integration into the highway’s safety apparatus.
In addition to the signage initiative, ongoing infrastructure enhancements such as the construction of underpasses and foot overbridges near identified black spots underscore a holistic approach towards road safety. These proactive measures, aimed at enhancing visibility, pedestrian safety, and overall traffic management, are indicative of concerted efforts to transform the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway into a safer thoroughfare for all road users.
