Smart Cameras to Curb Speeding on Bengaluru Mysuru Highway

The Bengaluru-Mysuru highway has been equipped with a sophisticated surveillance system to improve road safety and reduce speeding violations.

The Karnataka State Police’s traffic and road safety wing, in collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has installed 60 high-tech cameras along the 119-kilometre stretch. These cameras are aimed at detecting instances of over-speeding and other traffic infractions.

This strategic initiative includes 48 radar-based Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, positioned at six critical points in each direction. These cameras, installed at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore, are complemented by additional video cameras at three locations in each direction, installed by the NHAI. This comprehensive coverage extends to service roads to ensure any violations are swiftly identified and penalised. The primary objective of this installation is to monitor and curtail over-speeding, a significant contributor to accidents on this busy highway. However, the cameras are multi-functional. They are designed to detect a range of violations, including seatbelt non-compliance, mobile phone usage while driving, lane infractions, and the unauthorised presence of non-motorised vehicles, as well as two- and three-wheelers on the main thoroughfare.

The cameras are strategically placed at accident-prone zones such as Gananguru, Channapatna, Ramanagara, and Maddur, ensuring comprehensive surveillance across the entire route. Though the exact locations of the cameras have not been disclosed, the authorities have emphasised their focus on high-risk areas to maximise the impact on safety. Currently, the system is undergoing testing, with the automated issuance of challans to vehicle owners expected to commence shortly. This automated system aims to bring about a significant reduction in traffic violations by ensuring stringent enforcement of road safety rules. By leveraging advanced technology, this initiative marks a significant step forward in enhancing road safety on one of Karnataka’s most vital highways. The implementation of these cameras not only aims to reduce the frequency of accidents but also to promote a culture of responsible driving among motorists.

The integration of these advanced surveillance systems underscores the commitment of both the state police and the NHAI to utilise technology in fostering safer driving environments. As these measures take effect, it is anticipated that they will contribute substantially to reducing road mishaps and ensuring smoother traffic flow on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway.
