A Sitapur road crash killed two morning walkers and seriously injured a Provincial Rakshak Dal (PRD) jawan after an unidentified speeding vehicle struck a cyclist and then hit the two men on the Laharpur-Biswan road on Monday morning, police said. The driver allegedly fled the spot with the vehicle.
The accident occurred near Khanpur Sadat village, within the limits of Biswan police station, as the victims were returning home. The deceased were identified as Rakesh Verma, 62, and Ramesh Chandra Awasthi, 68. The injured PRD jawan was identified as Ram Swaroop, 50, who is receiving treatment at a hospital.
According to preliminary information cited by police, Swaroop was riding his bicycle home after completing duty at a religious programme in Joshi Tola. The unidentified vehicle allegedly hit his bicycle from behind, throwing him onto the road and causing injuries.
Investigators said the same vehicle then struck Verma and Awasthi, who were returning after their morning walk. Both men sustained critical injuries in the collision. The incident brought together several road users—an on-duty security personnel returning home, cyclists and pedestrians—within the same sequence of impact.
Police reached the location after receiving information about the crash and arranged an ambulance to take the injured people to a community health centre. Doctors declared Verma and Awasthi dead on arrival. Their bodies were sent for post-mortem examination, police said.
The crash also leaves the driver’s identity and the exact circumstances of the collision to be established. Biswan station house officer Arvind Singh said investigators were examining CCTV footage to identify the vehicle and trace the driver. Police have not publicly identified the vehicle or announced an arrest in the information supplied by the Times of India report.
The incident has again brought attention to the risks faced by cyclists and pedestrians on roads shared with fast-moving vehicles, although the police investigation will determine the specific causes and circumstances in this case. The immediate police action is focused on reviewing available CCTV footage, identifying the vehicle and tracing the driver.
