Sinhagad Road Flyover Phase 2 Opens

The second phase of the Sinhagad Road Flyover, a significant infrastructure project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion, was officially inaugurated today.

The 2.2-kilometer stretch from Vitthalwadi Arch to Fun Time Theatre is expected to ease daily commutes for thousands of residents. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol, MP Medha Kulkarni, MLA Hemant Rasane, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, and other dignitaries. Deputy CM Pawar emphasized the project’s importance in reducing traffic bottlenecks and enhancing connectivity for residents of rapidly growing areas such as Vadgaon, Dhayari, Narhe, Nanded, and Khadakwasla.

“By bypassing five major junctions – Inamdar Chowk, Hingne Chowk, Santosh Hall Chowk, Datta Hotel Chowk, and Goyal Ganga Chowk – the flyover will not only reduce travel time but also curb vehicular emissions,” Pawar stated during the inauguration. The project, undertaken by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), is part of a broader initiative to address urban mobility challenges and promote sustainable development. The flyover’s design incorporates eco-friendly features, including energy-efficient lighting and provisions for future public transport integration.

Municipal Commissioner Dr. Bhosale highlighted the project’s significance in the city’s infrastructural development. “The flyover will provide relief to over 1.5 lakh daily commuters, significantly reducing travel time and improving air quality by minimizing traffic-induced emissions,” he remarked. The Sinhagad Road Flyover is being constructed in three phases. Phase 1, a 520-meter unidirectional flyover near Rajaram Bridge towards Swargate, was opened in August 2024. Phase 2, the newly inaugurated 2.2-kilometer flyover from Vitthalwadi to Fun Time Theatre towards Sinhagad, is now operational. Phase 3, a 1.5-kilometer flyover from Indian Hume Gate (Goyal Ganga Chowk) to Inamdar Chowk towards Swargate, is scheduled for completion by June 15, 2025.

The flyover’s construction employed the prestressed box girder technique, with a road width of 7.3 meters and 60 supporting pillars. The project has been designed to accommodate future traffic growth and integrate seamlessly with the city’s broader transportation network.

Residents and daily commuters have expressed optimism about the project’s potential to alleviate long-standing traffic issues. “The flyover will make our daily commute much smoother and less time-consuming,” said a local resident.

As Pune continues to expand, infrastructure projects like the Sinhagad Road Flyover play a crucial role in ensuring sustainable urban development and improving the quality of life for its residents.
