Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027 Tightens Crowd Plans as Influx Surges

Crowd control, sanitation and water management have been identified as the top priorities for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027 in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar, with authorities preparing for gatherings expected to be four to five times larger than at previous editions, district guardian minister and Kumbh Mela minister Girish Mahajan said.

Mahajan made the statement after performing the Dhwaja Stambh Pujan at Kushavarta Teerth in Trimbakeshwar. The site is currently closed to pilgrims because development work is in progress. Authorities are implementing detailed crowd-management measures in heavily congested religious zones, including Ramkund in Nashik and Kushavarta in Trimbakeshwar, to reduce the risk of accidents during the festival.

The Dhwajarohan, or flag-hoisting ceremony, is scheduled for October 31 at Ramkund, where seers of the Vaishnav sect will assemble, and at Kushavarta Teerth, where seers of the Shaiv sect will gather. The Simhastha Kumbh Mela is scheduled to take place in August and September 2027. Invitations have been extended to President Droupadi Murmu, the chief minister, cabinet ministers and other dignitaries.

Water availability has also emerged as a planning concern amid prevailing drought conditions. Mahajan said the administration was planning water use carefully and would recycle and reuse bathing water at Trimbakeshwar. He said the festival would be held during the peak monsoon months, roughly three months after the rains begin, and that water scarcity or reservation issues were not expected. The minister added that authorities would focus on using water judiciously.

Infrastructure work, including the construction and improvement of roads, ghats and civic amenities, is under way in the two pilgrimage centres. The administration is targeting completion of the works by June or July, ahead of the first holy bath scheduled for August. The timeline places the remaining construction and civic preparation work before the main influx of pilgrims.

Land and property acquisition processes are also under way, with compensation being provided to support preparations for the event. The measures are intended to create additional capacity for the expected movement of pilgrims and to support the wider infrastructure programme across Nashik and Trimbakeshwar.

The administration’s current plan combines crowd-control systems, sanitation arrangements, water recycling and expanded civic infrastructure. Further preparations will proceed towards the October 31 flag-hoisting ceremonies and the completion of roads, ghats and civic works by June or July 2027.
