Sidhi Rail Link Opens After Independence, 118 km Network Added

Sidhi district in Madhya Pradesh received its first railway connection since Independence on Saturday, with the inauguration of two new rail sections covering 118 km and the launch of a MEMU service between Devendranagar and Churhat. The project expands rail access across the Vindhya and Bundelkhand regions and is expected to improve travel to markets, educational institutions and healthcare facilities.

Chief minister Mohan Yadav and railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw virtually inaugurated the 53-km Satna-Devendranagar and 65-km Rewa-Churhat sections. The Devendranagar-Churhat MEMU service was also flagged off during ceremonies held at Nagod and Churhat railway stations. Deputy chief minister Rajendra Shukla, public representatives and senior railway officials attended the events.

The newly opened sections form part of the larger Lalitpur-Singrauli new rail line project. The Rewa-Churhat section passes through hilly terrain and includes multiple bridges and tunnels, including a 3.33-km tunnel. The railway expansion is intended to strengthen connections between Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh while improving access for residents of Satna, Panna, Rewa, Sidhi, Singrauli and nearby areas.

Vaishnaw described the new line as a potential economic lifeline for Vindhya and Bundelkhand. “Better rail connectivity will promote industrial activities and open up possibilities for new industrial corridors in the region,” he said. He added that railway projects worth nearly Rs 1.50 lakh crore were underway in Madhya Pradesh.

Yadav said the improved network would help farmers transport produce to larger markets, support trade and improve logistics facilities. He also cited better travel options for students and other residents as a benefit of the new connection. The opening therefore extends beyond passenger movement, linking a previously unconnected district to the wider regional transport network.

The railway minister said plans were being prepared to introduce more than 100 long- and short-distance train services in Madhya Pradesh in the coming years, including several MEMU services. He also referred to station redevelopment work at locations including Khajuraho and Gwalior, while Yadav said the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga-Khandwa railway line would be inaugurated shortly. The newly opened Sidhi connection is the latest operational milestone in the broader rail expansion programme covering central Madhya Pradesh.
