Shakur Basti Railway Station Gets New Terminal on Rohtak Road

Shakur Basti railway station in northwest Delhi has completed a new terminal on the Rohtak Road side, giving passengers a second entry and exit point and creating space for parking more than 100 vehicles. Railway services from the new terminal are expected to begin in about six months, subject to completion of track-related work, according to a senior railway official cited by Live Hindustan.

The new access point is intended to reduce dependence on the existing entrance from the Rani Bagh side. The Rohtak Road terminal includes a new station building, an entry and exit gate and a larger approach area for vehicles. The development is expected to make access easier for passengers arriving from Rohtak Road and nearby parts of northwest Delhi.

Two new platforms have already been built as part of the first phase of the expansion. These platforms are planned to handle trains travelling towards Bathinda and Punjab. The railway is also considering increasing the number of services from Shakur Basti in the future, although the report does not specify a final timetable or list of trains.

The terminal is not yet ready for passenger operations. A senior railway official said services from the Rohtak Road side could start after around six months because concrete track-laying work is still under way. Once the work is completed, trains bound for Bathinda are expected to depart from the new terminal.

The two sides of the station have not been directly connected because of the presence of informal settlements between them. Passengers travelling from the Rohtak Road terminal to the older Shakur Basti terminal may therefore have to walk approximately 250 metres. The new terminal is expected to offer easier road access than the Rani Bagh side, where congestion has been a recurring access issue according to the report.

Shakur Basti is being developed as a larger railway station. The report says several trains operating towards Punjab could eventually be shifted or started from the station. During the recent festival period, special trains were also operated from Shakur Basti, indicating that the station is already being used for additional passenger-handling capacity.

The new terminal is also located close to Madipur Metro station, which could improve public transport access for passengers. Unlike the Rani Bagh approach, the Rohtak Road side has a nearby metro connection, allowing commuters to combine metro travel with rail journeys. The larger entry area is also expected to make vehicle movement, parking and passenger access easier than at the existing side.

The next confirmed milestone is the completion of the concrete track work, after which railway authorities are expected to begin services from the Rohtak Road terminal. The report does not provide a specific opening date or confirm the individual train services that will operate from the new platforms.
