Saluru Municipality Election Delivers Hung House as YSRC Leads

The Saluru municipality election has produced a hung house, with the YSRC emerging as the single largest party after winning 13 of the 32 wards in Andhra Pradesh’s Parvathipuram Manyam district. The result leaves no party with an independent majority and shifts attention to negotiations ahead of the election of the municipal chairperson.

The Telugu Desam, or TD, won 11 wards, while its alliance partner, the Jana Sena, secured four. The BJP won one ward, taking the National Democratic Alliance’s combined tally to 16 seats. Independent candidates won the remaining three wards.

The numbers give the NDA alliance an equal seat count to the YSRC when the alliance’s three parties are considered together. However, the YSRC holds the largest individual tally, with 13 wards compared with the TD’s 11. The final composition means that control of the municipality will depend on how the post-election negotiations develop.

The result illustrates the difference between the largest party and a governing majority in a municipal body. The YSRC’s 13 wards leave it short of the 17 seats required for a majority in the 32-member municipality. The alliance’s combined 16 seats also fall one short of that threshold, while the three independents could become important to the election of the chairperson.

The immediate institutional question is therefore not only which party won the most wards, but which grouping can secure the support required to lead the municipality. The chairperson’s election will determine how the fractured mandate is translated into municipal administration, with negotiations expected to shape the next stage of the process.

The outcome also leaves Saluru without a single-party mandate. The YSRC has the strongest individual position, but the TD, Jana Sena and BJP together have a marginally larger bloc. The balance of seats means that the municipality’s leadership will be decided through the interaction between party strength, alliance coordination and the position taken by the independent councillors.

Deccan Chronicle reported the ward-wise outcome and said attention had turned to post-election negotiations and the election of the municipal chairperson. No further details on the schedule for that election or on any formal arrangement between the parties were provided in the report. The next confirmed milestone is the process to elect the chairperson and establish the municipality’s leadership.
