Sabarmati railway station’s Rs 335-crore redevelopment has reached 85% completion and is expected to be ready by the end of December, officials said, positioning the Ahmedabad station to become a multimodal transport hub linking conventional rail with Metro and high-speed rail services.
The redeveloped facility will connect with the Sabarmati and AEC Metro stations, as well as the high-speed rail station, allowing passengers to interchange between different modes of transport. The project covers the Sabarmati broad-gauge station, which will have seven platforms, and Sabarmati SBT station towards Sabarmati Jail, which will have three platforms.
Each station will have three foot-over bridges. Passenger movement across the expanded facilities will be supported by 28 lifts and 28 escalators. The station will also include Braille, guide and warning tiles, along with accessible ticket counters for persons with disabilities, according to officials.
A two-storey holding area measuring around 86,000 square feet is being developed to accommodate more than 10,000 passengers. The facility is intended to manage surges in passenger volumes, particularly during festivals. The expansion is being undertaken at a station that currently handles more than 35,000 passengers daily.
Sabarmati currently originates 19 trains, while another 22 trains pass through the station. The redevelopment is therefore aimed not only at improving the station building but also at managing interchange and passenger circulation across a rail network that already serves substantial daily demand.
The station is being equipped with integrated CCTV, a supervisory control and data acquisition system, a building management system and real-time passenger information. A 1,300-kilowatt solar power plant has also been proposed, and the station is planned as an Indian Green Building Council gold-rated green building.
Work on the East Wing of the main station building is largely complete. Unreserved Ticketing System, Passenger Reservation System and ticket counters are operational there, while the waiting hall has been shifted to the wing. The remaining redevelopment work is expected to be completed by the end of December.
