RTFMS Integration Reaches 100% Across Karimnagar Power Circle

Karimnagar has become the first circle under Telangana Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGNPDCL) to complete 100% integration of the Real-Time Feeder Monitoring System (RTFMS), covering all 82 substations in the circle, the utility’s Chairman and Managing Director Karnati Varun Reddy announced on Friday.

The system has been integrated with the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) network, allowing power-supply conditions and feeder performance to be monitored from a central control room. TGNPDCL said the technology is intended to improve supply reliability, reduce interruptions and help the utility identify and address technical problems more quickly.

According to the CMD, RTFMS provides real-time information on power interruptions, feeder loads, voltage levels and consumption patterns. The system can generate alerts when an outage occurs, while also helping identify overloaded feeders and voltage fluctuations that may affect supply.

The monitoring platform is designed to give field-level personnel faster information about faults. TGNPDCL said this would support quicker deployment of maintenance teams, more efficient coordination during restoration work and shorter periods of interruption for consumers. The utility also said the data would help officials take preventive action before some potential supply problems become larger operational faults.

The Karimnagar milestone forms part of a wider rollout across the TGNPDCL network. So far, 1,005 substations have been integrated with SCADA under the RTFMS initiative, according to the utility. The CMD said Hanamkonda, Khammam and Komaram Bheem Asifabad circles were expected to achieve complete integration soon.

TGNPDCL has 419 substations still to be integrated, and the CMD said the remaining work would be completed within the next two months. The announcement places the Karimnagar achievement within a broader effort to shift electricity distribution towards continuous digital monitoring rather than relying only on consumer complaints or periodic field inspections.

The initiative is being expanded under the guidance of Telangana Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka. The minister recently laid the foundation stone for the initiative at Madhira in Khammam district, with support from Navin Mittal, Special Chief Secretary to the Energy Department, the CMD said.

For consumers, the utility’s stated objective is not only to detect outages but also to improve the speed and coordination of restoration. Real-time operational data can help control-room staff identify the affected feeder, alert field teams and track the status of restoration work. However, the announcement did not provide circle-wise data on reductions in outage duration or interruption frequency following the technology’s deployment.

Reddy congratulated the engineers and other personnel involved in completing the Karimnagar integration and said TGNPDCL would continue adopting advanced technologies across its operational network. The remaining 419 substations are scheduled for integration within the next two months, according to the utility.
