Karimnagar Leads Telangana in RTFMS Power Network Upgrade

Karimnagar has become the first circle under the Telangana Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGNPDCL) to complete 100 per cent integration of the Real-Time Feeder Monitoring System (RTFMS), bringing all 82 substations in the circle under the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

TGNPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Karnati Varun Reddy announced the achievement on Friday, stating that the system would help the power utility monitor feeder performance in real time, identify technical problems faster and improve the reliability of electricity supply. The announcement was made as the corporation expands RTFMS integration across its wider operational network.

RTFMS allows conditions on power feeders to be monitored from a SCADA control room. The system can generate immediate alerts when an interruption occurs and provide information on feeder loads, voltage levels, power consumption and other operating parameters. According to TGNPDCL, this enables field personnel to respond more quickly to faults and coordinate restoration work more efficiently.

The technology is also designed to identify overloaded feeders and voltage fluctuations as they occur. TGNPDCL said this could support preventive action before technical issues develop into longer interruptions. The system’s real-time data collection is intended to give distribution managers a clearer view of network performance than is possible through delayed or manual reporting.

The Karimnagar milestone comes as the utility continues to integrate substations across its service area. So far, 1,005 substations under TGNPDCL have been integrated with SCADA through the RTFMS initiative. The CMD said Hanamkonda, Khammam and Komaram Bheem Asifabad circles were expected to achieve full integration soon, while the remaining 419 substations would be integrated within the next two months.

The initiative is being expanded under the guidance of Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who recently laid the foundation stone for the initiative at Madhira in Khammam district. TGNPDCL is implementing the programme with the support of Special Chief Secretary to the Energy Department Navin Mittal.

For consumers, the immediate operational objective is shorter disruption periods rather than a change to the physical electricity network. Faster alerts can help the utility locate interruptions more quickly, while information on loading and voltage conditions can assist teams in identifying network stress and planning corrective action. The utility has linked the technology to its broader aim of providing a more reliable and uninterrupted power supply.

Reddy congratulated the engineers and personnel involved in completing the Karimnagar integration and said TGNPDCL would continue adopting advanced technologies across its distribution network. The corporation’s next stated milestone is the integration of the remaining 419 substations within two months.
