RG Kar Corruption Case: Calcutta High Court Grants Suman Hazra Bail

The Calcutta High Court has granted bail to Suman Hazra, a former vendor associated with the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital financial corruption case, after noting that the main accused, former principal Sandip Ghosh, had already secured bail from the Supreme Court.

Hazra was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on September 2, 2024, in connection with the financial corruption case involving the Kolkata government hospital. According to the report by Bartaman Patrika, Hazra was involved in the business of supplying medical equipment to the hospital and was alleged by investigators to be close to Ghosh.

The High Court granted Hazra bail on the ground that there was no continuing need to keep him in custody after Ghosh had received bail from the Supreme Court. The report did not provide the detailed conditions imposed on Hazra or the full reasoning contained in the court’s order.

The case relates to alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during Ghosh’s tenure as its principal. The proceedings have drawn attention to the way public hospitals procure medical equipment and manage vendor relationships, although the report did not specify the transactions or procurement contracts at the centre of the allegations.

Ghosh had earlier been denied bail by the Calcutta High Court on February 23 in the CBI’s financial corruption case. The Supreme Court later granted him conditional bail on October 16, according to the report. A division bench comprising Justices M. M. Sundresh and Prasanna B. Varale passed that order.

Hazra’s release changes the custody position of another accused in the case, but it does not by itself determine the outcome of the underlying allegations. The report did not state whether the CBI has completed its investigation, whether charges have been framed, or what further proceedings are scheduled before the trial court or the High Court.
