Residents along Chennai’s East Coast Road (ECR) are witnessing a significant transformation with the implementation of essential water supply and sewerage projects, fulfilling a longstanding community demand.
However, amidst the infrastructural upgrades, residents are urging for improved coordination among government agencies to ensure the seamless execution of these vital schemes. The ECR, adorned with upscale gated communities and luxurious villas, harbours an underlying narrative of urban infrastructure challenges, posing potential threats to groundwater reservoirs and water bodies like the Buckingham Canal, amidst rapid urbanisation. Addressing the pressing need for upgraded infrastructure, comprehensive initiatives are underway to install pipelines for drinking water and sewer networks in various ECR locales, including Neelankarai, Uthandi, and Semmencheri. The integration of a robust water supply and drainage network has been a longstanding aspiration since these areas merged with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).
In Neelankarai, a substantial investment of ₹77.03 crore is allocated for the water supply network, catering to approximately 4,986 households. Additionally, the installation of sewer lines in Kottivakkam, Neelankarai, and Palavakkam, costing ₹418.20 crore, aims to benefit around 12,776 households. Despite these efforts, concerns arise regarding the synchronisation of underground drainage work with road-laying activities, raising apprehensions among residents about potential disruptions and resource wastage. Similarly, residents in Uthandi and Semmencheri express relief as their longstanding aspirations for piped water supply are realised. However, challenges persist concerning the concurrent execution of sewer projects and road infrastructure, prompting calls for enhanced inter-departmental coordination to optimise resource utilisation and ensure quality road development. As the projects progress, Chennai Metrowater assures residents of timely water connections and infrastructure development, offering payment flexibility and concessional rates to eligible consumers. With most projects slated for completion within two to three years, residents remain hopeful for a harmonised approach towards infrastructure development along the bustling ECR, fostering sustainable urban growth and improved living standards.
