Uttar Pradesh reached a major milestone in India’s defence manufacturing journey with the inauguration of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile production unit in Lucknow, under the UP Defence Industrial Corridor.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, joining virtually from Delhi, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath led the launch of this critical facility on Sunday. The Rs 300-crore BrahMos unit has been built on 80 hectares of land provided free by the state government. Completed in three and a half years, it will manufacture the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile, a joint India-Russia venture with a top speed of Mach 2.8 and a range of 290 to 400 km. The missile can be launched from land, sea, or air and features a “fire and forget” system for precision targeting. The ceremony also saw the inauguration of the Titanium and Super Alloys Materials Plant, named the Strategic Materials Technology Complex. This facility will produce specialised materials used in high-end aerospace and defence systems, including those for ISRO’s Chandrayaan missions and Indian fighter jets. Additionally, the BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility was launched, which will handle testing and final assembly of missiles.
The UP Defence Industrial Corridor—announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018—aims to bolster self-reliance in defence production under the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives. The Lucknow node, part of the corridor’s six key locations, now hosts one of India’s most advanced missile production facilities. On the same day, the foundation stone was laid for the Defence Testing Infrastructure System (DTIS), a new facility to certify defence equipment and systems. The event also featured short films on BrahMos, Aero Alloy Technology, and the wider Defence Corridor. DRDO Secretary Dr. Sameer V. Kamat gave the welcome address, and PTC Industries Chairman Sachin Agarwal highlighted private sector contributions. The UP Defence Corridor spans six nodes—Lucknow, Kanpur, Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, and Chitrakoot—strategically located near major expressways like the Purvanchal and Ganga Expressways. Developed by UPEIDA, the corridor offers smooth logistics for materials and exports, making Uttar Pradesh a rising hub in global defence supply chains.
With this launch, Uttar Pradesh becomes the second Indian state after Tamil Nadu to establish a Defence Industrial Corridor, pushing forward India’s ambitions to reduce imports, increase local manufacturing, and strengthen defence exports.
