Rajkot Farmers Hit Hard by Airport Flooding, Seek Redress

Rajkot: In the wake of a recent infrastructure failure at Rajkot International Airport (RIA), the village panchayat has raised serious concerns regarding the damage caused by a collapsed perimeter wall. The incident, which occurred on August 7 following heavy rains, has led to significant crop destruction and soil erosion in the nearby agricultural lands.

The perimeter wall collapse resulted in a sudden surge of water that inundated fields, notably impacting the land of local farmer . According to   Kotadi’s sarpanch , the village administration has formally requested compensation from RIA for the damages incurred. “The torrential water flow, originating from the airport’s accumulated floodwaters, severely affected the crops and soil integrity on property,” stated. situated about 30 kilometres east of Rajkot and in proximity to the airport in Hirasar village, has historically managed seasonal flooding with relative ease. However, this year’s intense rains and the subsequent wall collapse have led to unprecedented flooding in the region. “Previously, the local stream would handle the monsoon flows without significantly impacting our fields. This year’s scenario, however, overwhelmed our usual flood management capabilities,”  explained.

In addition to addressing the airport authorities, the panchayat has reached out to Chotila MLA, urging a comprehensive survey of the damage and advocating for financial compensation to support affected farmers. The MLA’s intervention is sought to expedite the compensation process and mitigate the financial strain on the local agricultural community. The situation underscores the broader implications of infrastructural failures on rural economies and highlights the urgent need for robust disaster preparedness and compensation mechanisms to protect vulnerable communities.
