R’sthan Approves 3D GIS Models for City Development

The Rajasthan government has approved a proposal to create Geographic Information System (GIS) based 3D models of Jodhpur, Udaipur, Kota and Ajmer. In an official announcement, it was stated that the state government intends to develop GIS-based 3D models of these four cities to enhance the planning and management of urban development. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has endorsed a financial proposal amounting to INR 1.06 billion for execution of the GIS-based 3D city and Rajdhara Satellite Imagery Repository projects in the aforementioned cities.

This initiative will significantly facilitate effective assessments, simulations and planning by enabling the inclusion of proposed land use in the cities’ master plan, construction and expansion of new roads, flyovers, new residential areas, drainage plans, as well as other important ground-level works, large-scale infrastructure development, transport planning, land planning, town planning and more. The statement also mentioned that the developed 3D models would allow for virtual tours of the cities using augmented reality or virtual reality technology.

The Rajdhara platform will also establish a ‘repository’ of satellite imagery capturing various time periods in Rajasthan. This repository will facilitate analysis of land use, changes in reservoirs/water sources and forest areas, land cover, crop yield estimation, growth and expansion of cities and other relevant factors as required by different departments.
