A 50-bed critical care block at Government Teaching General Hospital in Rajamahendravaram was virtually inaugurated on Saturday by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilisers J.P. Nadda from Amaravati, according to a report by Deccan Chronicle – South.
The new critical care block is intended to expand access to advanced medical services for people in East Godavari district and neighbouring areas. East Godavari district collector Keerthi Chekuri said the facility would support emergency care, critical care and isolation services at the government teaching hospital.
The building was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 23.75 crore using funds provided under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission, or PM-ABHIM. The mission funding places the project within the broader effort to strengthen public health infrastructure through dedicated critical-care facilities.
According to the report, the block has been established as part of a statewide initiative to set up critical care blocks in 21 hospitals. The project at Government Teaching General Hospital is therefore one component of a wider expansion of critical-care infrastructure across Andhra Pradesh.
The facility is expected to improve the availability of emergency and intensive medical services within the public health system in East Godavari. Its stated functions include critical care and isolation, allowing the hospital to handle patients requiring higher levels of medical attention within the government healthcare network.
Chekuri said the block would strengthen emergency medical services, critical care and isolation capabilities and help meet future healthcare needs. The report did not specify the block’s staffing pattern, medical equipment, commissioning schedule or the date on which all beds would become operational.
