The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), responding to the recent rain-induced flooding in various city areas, has embarked on a proactive mission to identify and address new waterlogging-prone spots. To effectively mitigate monsoon-related challenges, the PMC has mandated the formation of quick response teams across its 15 ward offices.
These teams are tasked with promptly resolving issues that cause inconvenience to citizens during the monsoon season. Waterlogging on Pune’s roads is primarily caused by garbage and debris obstructing stormwater drains. A PMC official highlighted that these problematic areas have been identified in the past, and concerted efforts are now underway to clear the blockages. “Garbage and debris must be removed from drain covers to ensure smooth water flow, thereby reducing the risk of flooding. To expedite this process, health department staff from each ward office will assist the existing teams,” the official stated. Additionally, the lids of stormwater drains are being repaired and securely placed to prevent any untoward incidents.
Ward offices have been directed to pinpoint new locations susceptible to waterlogging. The PMC has completed cleaning the main drainage lines and is now focused on identifying potential overflow points. The identified spots will be systematically addressed to prevent future flooding. The establishment of quick response teams is a crucial part of this initiative. These teams will operate in shifts around the clock until October 30, ensuring that any rain-related issues are swiftly managed. Furthermore, the PMC has activated a disaster management cell in its main building to provide round-the-clock support. Ward offices are also instructed to set up local disaster management cells and inform citizens about their operations, ensuring a coordinated and effective response during emergencies.
