Pune’s Inner Ring Road Faces Setback Amidst Election Priorities”

In a potential setback for the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), the development of the inner ring road is anticipated to experience delays due to the forthcoming Lok Sabha and assembly elections later this year, as revealed by a senior official.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), under pressure from the state government, has been striving to expedite the land acquisition process for the outer ring road, targeting completion by June this year. However, senior officials at PMRDA indicate that the inner ring road’s progress is likely to be hampered, primarily attributed to the diversion of attention and resources towards the electoral processes. Although a joint survey for land acquisition in the first phase, spanning from Solu to Wadgaon Shinde, has been successfully concluded, the actual acquisition process is expected to face delays. The impending Lok Sabha polls, assembly elections, and local corporation elections are projected to engage revenue officials extensively throughout the year, potentially impeding the pace of land acquisition. The upcoming electoral activities are likely to occupy the time and efforts of revenue officials, impacting the momentum of the inner ring road project. Unless there is a dedicated staff allocation to accelerate land acquisition, the work is anticipated to experience slowdowns,” stated the official familiar with the matter.

The inner ring road, a crucial infrastructure development for Pune, is now at risk of facing logistical challenges and prolonged timelines due to the intricate dynamics of electoral responsibilities absorbing the attention of key stakeholders. The prioritisation of election-related duties over ongoing developmental initiatives raises concerns about the continuity and seamless execution of vital projects in the region. This development highlights the need for strategic planning and dedicated resources to ensure the timely progression of critical infrastructure undertakings, despite the concurrent demands of electoral activities.
