Pune Vehicle Registrations Fall 26%, but EV Demand Rises

Pune recorded 10,534 vehicle registrations between October 10 and 19, a 26% decline from the 14,168 vehicles registered during the corresponding Navratra and Dussehra period last year, according to Regional Transport Office data reported by Punekar News. The fall came as rising living costs and financial pressure appeared to weigh on vehicle purchases across the city.

The decline was particularly visible in the four-wheeler segment, while registrations of two-wheelers also remained subdued. The city registered 3,634 fewer vehicles than during the same period last year. Among non-electric vehicles, two-wheelers accounted for 7,046 registrations, followed by 2,595 cars.

The comparison is also influenced by last year’s reduction in Goods and Services Tax rates ahead of Dussehra, which lowered vehicle prices and helped lift demand, especially for cars. No comparable boost was reported for this year’s festive period in the information available.

Electric vehicles moved against the broader trend. EV registrations rose by around 5%, increasing from 1,566 units last year to 1,638 during the 10-day period. Electric two-wheelers accounted for 1,182 registrations, while electric cars contributed 382 units.

A senior RTO official said the decline was not a cause for concern because vehicle purchases generally reach a peak around Dhanteras and Diwali. The official said some buyers may have already booked vehicles for purchase next month, indicating that the October 10-19 figures may not capture the full festive-season demand.

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Regional Transport Office recorded 4,411 vehicle registrations between October 15 and 19. These included 4,035 non-transport vehicles and 376 transport vehicles. The next major registration milestone will come during the Dhanteras and Diwali buying period, when vehicle dealers and transport authorities typically see higher consumer activity.
