Pune Traffic Signals Fail at 51 Locations During Meter Work

Pune traffic signals stopped working at 51 locations within the Pune Police Commissionerate limits at around 8 am on Friday, after an issue arose during the installation and updating of new prepaid electricity meters, according to Pune City Police.

The disruption affected multiple junctions across the commissionerate area. The police said officials contacted a junior engineer from the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Electrical Department, identified as Murmure, to determine why the signals had stopped functioning.

According to the information shared by the police, prepaid electricity meters are being installed and related updating work is currently underway. Some traffic signals stopped operating during this process, the engineer reportedly said.

Officials were working to restore the affected signals, but the police communication did not specify how long the restoration would take. It also did not identify the individual junctions where the signals had stopped functioning.

The outage placed a significant number of signalised traffic points outside normal operation across Pune’s urban road network. Traffic signals regulate vehicle movements and pedestrian crossings at busy junctions, but the information released by the police did not state whether traffic personnel had been deployed at the affected locations or whether diversions had been introduced.

The incident also highlights the operational dependence of city traffic infrastructure on electricity supply and coordination between civic departments. In this case, the disruption was linked to work involving prepaid electricity meters, while the affected assets were traffic signals managed within the city’s road and traffic administration system.

Pune City Police said efforts were underway to restore the signals. Further details on the affected locations, the number of signals brought back into service and the completion timeline were not provided in the communication cited by the report.
