Pune Traffic Diversions Highlight Fragile City Links
Pune’s central road network came under temporary pressure on Tuesday as a Tiranga Rally moved through the Deccan and Fergusson College Road areas, prompting traffic restrictions and diversions from the afternoon. The disruption offered another reminder of how quickly large public gatherings can affect movement across central Pune, where a limited number of arterial roads carry substantial daily traffic between residential, commercial and institutional districts.
The rally was scheduled to move from Lalit Mahal Hotel Chowk towards Dnyaneshwar Paduka Chowk, Tukaram Maharaj Paduka Chowk, Goodluck Chowk and Garware Chowk. Vehicle movement on parts of Fergusson College Road was restricted as the procession progressed, with arrangements expected to continue until about 7pm. For commuters, the immediate impact was a longer and less predictable journey. Traffic police directed vehicles towards alternative corridors, including routes through Sarasbaug, Dandekar Bridge, Mhatre Bridge, Nal Stop and Law College Road. Other diversions directed traffic towards Bajirao Road, Shimla Office Chowk, Prabhat Road and Senapati Bapat Road, depending on the direction of travel.
The disruption is significant because these roads do more than serve local traffic. They connect central Pune with Shivajinagar, Deccan, university areas and neighbourhoods farther west and south. When one major corridor is temporarily closed, traffic can quickly spill into adjoining streets that were not designed to accommodate the same volume. Tuesday’s experience also follows a broader pattern in Pune. The city regularly manages substantial traffic restrictions during processions, religious events and other large gatherings. During the 2026 Ashadhi Wari, for example, police introduced extensive traffic management measures, additional surveillance and dedicated personnel along procession routes. The recurring need for diversions raises a wider urban-planning question. Event management cannot rely only on police personnel and last-minute route changes. A more resilient system would combine advance public information with real-time traffic monitoring, public transport capacity and pedestrian-first crowd planning. Pune Police has already been expanding technology-led traffic and public-safety systems, creating scope for more predictive management of temporary disruptions.
There is also an environmental dimension. When vehicles are diverted through longer routes and remain stationary at junctions, fuel consumption and local emissions can increase. Encouraging commuters to use mass transit, walk where practical or shift journeys outside restricted periods can reduce that additional load. For a growing city, public events are part of urban life and cannot simply be treated as interruptions. The challenge is to accommodate them without making ordinary mobility disproportionately difficult. Better coordination between event organisers, traffic authorities and public transport agencies could help Pune move towards a system where civic activity and everyday travel can coexist with fewer disruptions.
