A Class 9 girl was seriously injured after a male classmate allegedly attacked her with a knife inside a school classroom in the Bavdhan area of Pune on Friday afternoon, following a dispute over a video posted on Instagram, according to Bavdhan police.
The incident took place at around 2.15 pm at an English-medium school serving the Mahalunge-Sus area. The injured student suffered wounds to her face and chest and was taken to a nearby hospital in a bleeding condition. Police said her condition was stable.
Senior Police Inspector Arvind Pawar said the dispute was linked to a school excursion to Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar on October 17 and 18. During a cultural programme held on the trip, some girl students were dancing and a Class 9 boy recorded the performance on his mobile phone and posted the video on Instagram.
The video led to an argument among students, police said. Following objections from other students, the boy was made to delete the video from the social media platform. Police said the student allegedly held a grudge over the dispute and later attacked the girl in the classroom.
Bavdhan police reached the school after receiving information about the incident and took the student into custody. The injured girl’s statement has been recorded. The process of registering a case was continuing late on Friday night, according to the report.
The incident has also prompted the school administration to announce immediate security measures. In a statement, the administration described the incident as unfortunate and said it had informed the police and would fully cooperate with the investigation. The school said it had removed the student held responsible from the institution.
The administration also said it had begun stricter checks of students’ schoolbags across classes as a precaution against a recurrence. The police investigation and the legal process will determine the circumstances of the attack and the action to be taken under applicable law.
The case places renewed attention on how schools manage conflicts arising from student use of social media, as well as how institutions monitor prohibited objects and respond to safety risks during school hours. The immediate official steps are the completion of the police case process, continued investigation and the school’s implementation of its announced bag-checking measures.
